Most powerful: the M5 Max and M5 Ultra (2026) add Wi-Fi 7 and Neural Accelerators for AI, while Ultra models (M3 Ultra or M5 Ultra) offer up to 512GB of memory for the heaviest 3D, 8K and AI workloads.
An Ultra chip is two Max chips fused together, so it has double the CPU and GPU cores, double the memory bandwidth and much more memory. Ultra models also have two front Thunderbolt ports (instead of USB-C), support up to eight external displays and weigh 3.6kg rather than 2.7kg. For most creative work a Max chip is plenty; choose Ultra for large 3D scenes, 8K multicam editing, scientific computing or very large AI models.
M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2 Max, M4 Max and M5 Max models support up to five external displays. M2 Ultra, M3 Ultra and M5 Ultra models support up to eight.

Max models can be configured with 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB. Ultra models start at 1TB, and the M3 Ultra and M5 Ultra go up to 16TB. The internal SSD isn't user-upgradeable, but Thunderbolt 5 on 2025 and 2026 models makes external SSDs almost as fast.
The Mac mini is smaller and cheaper and is great for everyday and many pro tasks. The Mac Studio has far more powerful Max and Ultra chips, more memory and storage options, more ports, 10Gb Ethernet as standard, support for more displays and a cooling system that sustains full performance for hours.
The iMac has a 24-inch display built in and uses Apple's standard chips. The Mac Studio needs a separate display but has much more powerful pro chips and far more memory, storage and connectivity.
