The M4 iPad Pro introduced the Ultra Retina XDR tandem OLED display, a much thinner and lighter design, a landscape front camera, an optional nano-texture display and support for Apple Pencil Pro. It was succeeded by the iPad Pro M5 in October 2025.
Apple released the iPad Pro with M4 in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes on 15 May 2024.
iPad Pro M4 and M5 work with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). They are not compatible with Apple Pencil (2nd generation).
iPad Pro M1 and M2 work with Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C); the M2 adds Pencil hover.
iPad Pro M4 and M5 need the thinner Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro (M4). iPad Pro M1 and M2 use the earlier Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro 11-inch or 12.9-inch. The two keyboards are not interchangeable.
Wi-Fi + Cellular models add 5G mobile data and GPS, so you can get online anywhere with a data plan. iPad Pro M4 and M5 cellular models use eSIM only; M1 and M2 models support both a nano-SIM and eSIM. Wi-Fi models are cheaper and ideal if you mainly use your iPad at home, at work or with your phone's hotspot.
