      FAQs

      Standard glass is a glossy panel with an anti-reflective coating. It gives the punchiest, most vivid image with deep blacks and crisp text, and it's what most people will be used to from an iMac or MacBook. The trade-off is that bright light sources, such as a window behind you or overhead office lighting, will show up as reflections.

      Nano-texture glass is etched at the nanometre level, rather than coated, so that it scatters incoming light. Reflections become a soft, diffused haze instead of a sharp mirror image, which makes it far easier to work in bright rooms. Unlike a traditional matte coating it keeps contrast and sharpness very high, but side by side images look very slightly less glossy and "inky" than on standard glass, and the difference is most noticeable in a dim room.

      Nano-texture was an extra-cost option from Apple: £250 on the Studio Display and £1,000 on the Pro Display XDR.

      Choose nano-texture if:

      • Your desk faces or sits beside a window, or you work under bright overhead lighting
      • You find reflections distracting or tiring over long working days
      • You're in a shared or open-plan office where you can't control the lighting

      Choose standard glass if:

      • You work in a room with controlled or indirect lighting
      • You want the most vivid, high-contrast image for photo, video or general use
      • You'd rather not worry about special cleaning requirements
      • You want the best value, as standard glass models are usually cheaper

      If you're unsure, standard glass is the right choice for most home setups. Nano-texture is a problem-solver for bright rooms.

      Nano-texture glass needs more care than standard glass. Apple advises cleaning it only with the Apple Polishing Cloth. Other cloths, paper towels and general-purpose screen cleaners can damage the etched surface or leave residue that can't be removed. If your display doesn't come with a Polishing Cloth, replacements are available from Apple. Always power off and unplug the display before cleaning, and never spray liquid directly onto the screen.

      Standard glass can be cleaned with any soft, lint-free cloth.

      The Studio Display was sold in three configurations, all at the same screen quality:

      Tilt-adjustable stand
      A slim aluminium stand that tilts from -5° to +25°. The height is fixed. It's the lightest stand option (6.3kg), has the smallest footprint (16.8cm deep) and has the same original price as the VESA version. It suits most people sitting at a standard-height desk, or anyone who uses a laptop riser or monitor shelf to set the height.

      Tilt- and height-adjustable stand
      Adds a counterbalanced arm that lets you raise or lower the screen smoothly by up to 105mm with one hand, while keeping the same tilt range. It's heavier (7.7kg) and deeper (20.7cm), and it cost £400 more from Apple. It's worth it if you share the desk, use a standing desk, or want the top of the screen exactly at eye level for good posture.

      VESA mount adapter
      No stand at all. The back of the display has a 100 x 100mm VESA mount, so you can fit it to a monitor arm or wall bracket (sold separately). It's the lightest (5.5kg) and slimmest (3.1cm) configuration, frees up desk space, and is the only Studio Display option that can be used in portrait orientation. Make sure your arm is rated to hold at least 5.5kg.

      Not easily. The Studio Display's stand or VESA adapter is fixed to the display at the factory and isn't designed to be removed or swapped by the owner, so it's important to choose the right option when you buy. If you think you might want a monitor arm in future, the VESA version is the most flexible choice.

      The Pro Display XDR is different: its Pro Stand and VESA Mount Adapter attach magnetically and can be swapped in seconds.

      Only the VESA mount adapter version, used with a portrait-capable arm or bracket. The tilt-adjustable and height-adjustable stands are landscape only. The Pro Display XDR can rotate to portrait on its Pro Stand or with its VESA Mount Adapter.

      The Pro Display XDR was sold without a stand, so you'll need one of these:

      Pro Stand
      Apple's premium stand, originally £949. It attaches magnetically, offers 120mm of counterbalanced height adjustment and -5° to +25° tilt, and rotates the display 90° into portrait mode.

      VESA Mount Adapter
      Originally £199. It also attaches magnetically and lets you use a third-party 100 x 100mm VESA arm or wall mount, in landscape or portrait. It's a popular choice for multi-monitor setups and saves a significant amount compared with the Pro Stand.

      Studio Display is the right choice for the vast majority of people. It's a superb 27-inch 5K screen with the same 218 ppi sharpness as the XDR, and it adds a 12MP Center Stage camera, three studio-quality mics and six speakers, making it a complete desk setup for work, video calls and entertainment. It can also charge a MacBook at up to 96W over a single cable.

      Pro Display XDR is built for professional colour-critical and HDR work such as video grading, photography and visual effects. It offers a larger 32-inch 6K canvas, much higher brightness (up to 1,600 nits peak) and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio thanks to local dimming. It has no camera, microphones or speakers, and needs a stand or VESA adapter.

      Studio Display works with any Mac with Apple silicon, plus Thunderbolt 3 Intel Macs from around 2016 onwards (MacBook Pro 2016 or later, MacBook Air 2018 or later, Mac mini 2018 or later, iMac 2017 or later, iMac Pro and Mac Pro 2019), running macOS Monterey 12.3 or later.

      Pro Display XDR runs at full 6K on all Macs with Apple silicon. Only some Intel Macs support it, so if you have an Intel Mac please get in touch and we'll confirm compatibility before you buy.

      Yes. The Studio Display's Thunderbolt 3 port delivers up to 96W of power, enough to charge any MacBook Air or MacBook Pro while carrying video, camera, audio and the three USB-C ports over one cable. Heavier workloads on a 16-inch MacBook Pro may draw slightly more than 96W, so the battery may charge more slowly under sustained heavy use.
