The M4 Max has faster individual CPU cores, so it's quicker in most apps and the better value choice for photo, music, video and development work. The M3 Ultra is two M3 Max chips joined together, with up to 32 CPU cores, an 80-core GPU, 819GB/s memory bandwidth and up to 512GB of memory, ideal for large 3D scenes, 8K multicam and very large AI models.
The 16-core M4 Max adds two performance CPU cores and eight GPU cores (40 vs 32), raises memory bandwidth from 410GB/s to 546GB/s and supports 48GB, 64GB or 128GB of memory. The 14-core model has 36GB.
The 2025 Mac Studio kept the same design but moved to Thunderbolt 5 (up to 120Gb/s), the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips and up to 512GB of memory and 16TB of storage. It was succeeded by the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio (2026).
Apple announced the Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra on 5 March 2025, and it went on sale on 12 March 2025.
The M4 Max supports up to five external displays and the M3 Ultra up to eight.
