MacBook Pro Buyers Guide

Five generations of Apple silicon, three sizes, and a lot of spec sheets. This guide walks through processor, memory, storage, graphics, ports, displays and battery — so you can choose the right MacBook Pro with confidence, whether you buy it new or refurbished.

Buying a MacBook Pro can feel overwhelming. The line now spans the M1 from late 2020 all the way to the M5 Pro and M5 Max released in March 2026, and the right answer depends entirely on what you do with the machine. Whether you're a student, a creative professional or a developer running large models locally, the job of this guide is to match your workflow to the right hardware — not to sell you the most expensive thing on the shelf.

The short version
  • For everyday work — browsing, documents, email — any base chip from M1 onwards is genuinely quick. The cheapest route is a 13-inch M1 or M2; the best balance is a 14-inch base model.
  • For creative and professional work, a Pro-tier chip (M1 Pro through M5 Pro) with 16GB+ of memory covers photo editing, design and most video work comfortably.
  • Max-tier chips are for sustained heavy workloads: 3D, colour grading, large local AI models, multi-display setups.
  • Tier matters more than generation. A three-year-old Max chip still outruns this year's base chip on heavy multi-threaded work.
  • Every Mac in this guide runs the current version of macOS. Apple silicon machines also hold up unusually well over time — our own warranty data backs that up.

01Processor

Think of the processor as the machine's brain — it sets the ceiling on how quickly everything else happens. Since this guide was first written, the lineup has grown to five generations of Apple silicon: M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5, each available in up to three tiers.

  • Base chips (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5): excellent for everyday productivity, office work, light photo editing and general multitasking. These are far more capable than "entry-level" suggests.
  • Pro chips (M1 Pro → M5 Pro): more CPU and GPU cores, more memory bandwidth and more ports. The sweet spot for creative professionals, developers and anyone running demanding software regularly.
  • Max chips (M1 Max → M5 Max): the most cores, the most memory and the highest bandwidth. Built for sustained heavy workloads — video rendering, 3D, simulation, machine learning.

The M5 generation also changes the architecture, not just the clock speed. The M5 Pro and M5 Max introduce what Apple calls super cores — a new class of high-performance CPU core — and every GPU core now contains a Neural Accelerator, dedicated hardware for AI workloads. If you run on-device AI tools (local language models, AI features in creative apps), the M5 family is a genuine step change rather than the usual incremental bump. Apple quotes up to 4x the AI performance of the equivalent M4 chips.

Processor benchmarks

Geekbench 6 gives a useful like-for-like comparison of multi-core CPU performance across the range. The chart below shows the highest-core variant of every Apple silicon chip fitted to a MacBook Pro.

How to read this

  • Newer doesn't always mean faster. A base M5 scores well below an M3 Max or M4 Pro on multi-threaded work. If your workflow leans on sustained multi-core performance, a previous-generation Pro or Max chip is often the better buy than the latest base model.
  • Single-core performance is a different story. Every generation lifts single-core speed, which is what makes a machine feel snappy day-to-day. The M5 family currently posts the highest single-core scores of any laptop chip, but even an M1 remains quick for ordinary use.
  • Benchmarks are a reference, not a verdict. Match the chip to the work you actually do. If you don't regularly max out every core, the money is usually better spent on memory or storage.

02Memory

If the processor is the brain, memory (RAM) is its short-term working space. All Apple silicon Macs use unified memory — the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine share one pool of very fast memory on the same package — which is why a Mac with 16GB often feels smoother than a PC with considerably more.

The catch is that unified memory cannot be upgraded later. The amount you buy on day one is the amount the machine has for life, which makes this the single most important configuration decision.

Checking your current memory usage

The best guide to how much memory you need is how much you use now:

  1. Open Activity Monitor on your current Mac.
  2. Click the Memory tab.
  3. Work normally for a day and keep an eye on the memory pressure graph.

If memory pressure regularly turns yellow or red, size up on your next machine. It's also worth checking the recommended (not minimum) system requirements of the software you rely on.

Memory requirements by workflow

  • 8GB — light use: browsing, email, office apps. Only found on the oldest models now (13-inch M1/M2, 14-inch M3), and fine for that kind of work.
  • 16GB / 24GB — comfortable multitasking and professional apps. 16GB is the practical floor we'd suggest for anyone keeping a machine four years or more.
  • 32GB / 48GB / 64GB — creative suites (Adobe, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro), CAD, larger development environments.
  • 96GB / 128GB — heavy simultaneous workloads: long-form video editing, large sessions, 3D rendering, or running large language models locally. Local AI is the newest reason to buy big memory — model size is limited by RAM, not by enthusiasm.

Worth knowing

Memory has become the expensive part of a new Mac. Component prices for RAM and flash storage have risen sharply since 2024, and Apple's configuration prices have moved with them. 03Storage

One of the most common questions we hear at Hoxton Macs is "how much storage do I actually need?" The honest answer depends on your habits. If you're comfortable with cloud storage or external drives, a smaller internal drive saves real money. If you prefer everything on the machine itself, buy the headroom — like memory, the SSD cannot be upgraded later.

Checking your current usage

Open System Settings → General → Storage on your current Mac to see total capacity and how much you're using. Treat that figure as your baseline and leave yourself at least 20–25% free space — SSDs slow down and macOS gets unhappy when a drive is nearly full.

Two things changed with the M5 generation. The SSDs themselves are quicker — Apple quotes up to twice the speed of the previous generation, which you'll notice in large file transfers and when the system swaps memory to disk. And the cheaper tiers have disappeared at the top end: the M5 Pro now starts at 1TB and the M5 Max at 2TB, with no 512GB option at all. That raises the entry price of a new high-end machine, and it's part of the squeeze on configuration options we wrote about here.

04GPU

The GPU (graphics processing unit) handles everything visual — and, increasingly, a lot that isn't visual at all. For email, documents and browsing, every MacBook Pro GPU is comfortably more than you need. GPU choice starts to matter when your work includes:

  • Video editing, especially 4K and above
  • 3D rendering and animation
  • Advanced graphic design or CAD software
  • On-device AI — image generation, local language models, ML development

Three architectural milestones are worth knowing when comparing generations:

  • M3 onwards: hardware ray tracing. The M3, M4 and M5 families have dedicated ray-tracing hardware, which matters for 3D rendering and modern games. M1 and M2 machines do this work in software, much more slowly.
  • Memory bandwidth scales with tier. How fast the GPU can feed itself climbs steeply through the range — from 68GB/s on the base M1 to 614GB/s on the top M5 Max. As we'll see below, this number quietly decides more than the core count does.
  • M5 onwards: Neural Accelerators in every GPU core. The headline change of the current generation — dedicated AI hardware inside the GPU itself, separate from the Neural Engine that every Apple silicon chip has carried since the M1.

This chart rewards a closer look, because the ordering tells you things a spec sheet won't:

  • Old Max chips beat new Pro chips. The M2 Max still outscores the brand-new M5 Pro, and the M1 Max from 2021 outscores the M4 Pro. If your work is GPU-bound, a refurbished previous-generation Max is consistently better value than a new Pro.
  • The M3 Pro is the range's one step backwards. It scores below the M2 Pro it replaced — Apple cut its memory bandwidth from 200GB/s to 150GB/s that generation. Worth knowing if you're choosing between the two on the refurbished market.
  • The base M5 has caught the Pros. It now sits level with the M3 Pro and comfortably clear of the M1 Pro — though the M1 Max still beats it. Tier matters more than generation here, even more than it does for the CPU.
  • The M5 Max has reached desktop territory. Its Metal average lands between the M2 Ultra and M3 Ultra — chips that ship in the Mac Studio with a mains lead attached.

AI performance: two different speeds

"AI performance" gets quoted as a single multiplier, but running a language model locally actually involves two phases with opposite hardware demands, and it pays to know which one a claim refers to.

Reading the prompt (the pause before the first word appears) is limited by raw compute. This is where the M5 family's Neural Accelerators earn their keep: in Apple's own MLX testing, a base M5 produced its first token up to around 3.6x faster than an M4 on the same models. Generating the reply (the text streaming out) is limited by memory bandwidth instead — and in the same tests the M5 was 19–27% faster than the M4, almost exactly matching its 28% bandwidth advantage. The accelerators were present for both phases; they only transformed one of them.

For buyers, that gives a clean three-part heuristic for local AI work: memory decides which models you can run at all, bandwidth decides how fast they write back to you, and the M5 generation decides how fast they start. It also means high-bandwidth older chips hold up better than the marketing suggests — an M1 Max or M2 Max at 400GB/s still generates text faster than several newer Pro chips, even though an M5 machine will begin its answer sooner.

One honest caveat: those headline accelerator gains currently require software that uses them. Apple's MLX framework does (from macOS Tahoe 26.2); popular tools like Ollama and llama.cpp are part-way through adding support. The hardware is ahead of most of the software, and the gap is closing monthly — but if you benchmark an M5 with an older runtime today, you may see the bandwidth gain without the compute one.

05Ports and connectivity

Connectivity seems minor until you're carrying a hub everywhere. The split in the range is simple: the old-design 13-inch models have two ports and nothing else; every 14-inch and 16-inch model has a full set of built-in connections including HDMI, an SD card slot and MagSafe charging, which keeps the Thunderbolt ports free for accessories.

Thunderbolt 5 arrived with the M4 Pro and M4 Max and triples peak bandwidth over Thunderbolt 4. In practice it matters for external SSDs, high-refresh external displays and fast docks; for a printer and a USB drive, Thunderbolt 4 is more than enough. The M5 Pro and M5 Max also add Apple's new N1 networking chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 — the first wireless upgrade to the MacBook Pro in several generations, and worth having if your office network is being upgraded around you.

06External display support

There's nothing more frustrating than discovering after purchase that your new machine can't drive the monitor setup you had in mind. External display support is set by the chip, and the differences between tiers are significant.

The practical takeaways: base chips drive one or two external displays depending on generation, Pro chips two or three, Max chips three or four. If you run a multi-monitor desk, that alone may decide your tier. The M5 Pro's jump to three displays closes most of the gap that used to separate Pro from Max for desk-bound work.

07Battery

Battery life is consistently one of the top concerns we hear from buyers, and Apple silicon is the reason the modern MacBook Pro is so good at it. The figures below are Apple's own estimates — real-world results vary with workload and screen brightness, so treat them as a guide to relative differences rather than promises.

Three patterns are worth noticing. Base chips outlast Pro and Max chips of the same generation — fewer cores draw less power. The 16-inch models have the biggest batteries and the longest runtimes among the high-performance chips. And a quirk of the range: the cheapest machines here, the 13-inch M1 and M2, still post some of the best web-browsing figures on the list.

Buying in the UK or EU

08Size

With the specification settled, the last decision is physical. Three sizes, three quite different propositions:

13-inch MacBook Pro

  • Portability: the lightest MacBook Pro at 1.4kg, ideal for students and commuters.
  • Design: the older chassis — Touch Bar, two ports, no HDMI or SD slot. Apple discontinued this model in 2023, so it's now only available refurbished, which also makes it the cheapest way into a MacBook Pro by some distance.
  • Best for: everyday productivity where budget and weight matter most.

14-inch MacBook Pro

  • Balance: the modern chassis at its most portable — full port selection, Liquid Retina XDR display, and available with everything from a base M3 to an M5 Max.
  • Best for: most people, honestly. It's the only size that spans the entire chip range, so you can match it to almost any workflow.

16-inch MacBook Pro

  • Performance: the biggest screen, the biggest battery, and the best sustained performance — the larger chassis keeps high-end chips cooler for longer under load.
  • Portability: at over 2.1kg it's a machine you can move, rather than one you carry everywhere.
  • Best for: desktop-replacement work — video, audio, development — where screen area and thermal headroom earn their keep.

One further option on current models: the M5-generation machines can be configured with a nano-texture display, a matte finish that nearly eliminates glare. If you work near windows or under studio lighting it's worth seeking out; expect it to start appearing in the refurbished market as those machines cycle through.

09Save money by going refurbished

Once you know the specification you need, the next question is whether it has to be new. A refurbished MacBook Pro is not the same thing as a second-hand one: every machine we sell is professionally inspected, cleaned and tested, with any faulty components replaced before it goes back out. A widely used benchmarking tool that scores CPU and GPU performance, making different chips directly comparable.
Memory bandwidth
How quickly a chip can move data in and out of its memory, in GB/s. The key spec for token generation in local AI — it ranges from 68GB/s (M1) to 614GB/s (top M5 Max).
Neural Accelerator
Dedicated AI hardware built into every GPU core on M5-generation chips, speeding up on-device machine learning.
Neural Engine
Apple's dedicated processor block for machine-learning tasks, present in every Apple silicon chip.
Thunderbolt
The high-speed port standard on every MacBook Pro. Thunderbolt 4 carries up to 40Gb/s; Thunderbolt 5 up to 120Gb/s.
Unified memory
