If your MacBook isn’t charging, don’t panic, there are a few simple checks you can run through before assuming it’s a major issue. This guide will walk you through each step to help pinpoint the problem and get your Mac charging.
Check the Charger Components
A faulty charger is one of the most common reasons a MacBook won't charge.
Your MacBook charger consists of three parts:
-
The plug (also called the "duckhead")
-
The power adapter block
-
The charging cable
Start by using a different charger, if you have access to one. If your MacBook charges with a replacement, then the original charger is likely the culprit.
To narrow it down further, try swapping individual parts (plug, cable, adapter) between the working and non-working chargers. This can help you identify which piece is faulty.

💡 Tip: If you have a newer MacBook with MagSafe (2021 or later), you can also try charging it with a USB-C to USB-C cable connected directly to the laptop. This helps rule out issues with the MagSafe cable itself.
Inspect the Charging Port
If the charger seems fine, it’s time to take a closer look at the charging port on your Mac.
- Check for Debris: Shine a flashlight into the port. Dust, lint, or dirt buildup can prevent proper contact. Use a clean, soft-bristled toothbrush to gently remove anything you see.
- Check for Corrosion: A greenish tint, discolouration, or sticky residue could be signs of liquid damage. If you spot any of these, stop here and contact an Apple Authorised Service Provider for a proper inspection.
Run Apple Diagnostics
If your MacBook powers on, you can use Apple Diagnostics to check for any underlying hardware problems. Follow our guide, here.
Take note of any reference codes that appear, then reach out to an Apple Authorised Service Provider, or contact us at Hoxton Macs if you’re under warranty.
Reinstall macOS via Apple Configurator
If the hardware appears fine but the Mac still won’t charge, software could be the culprit. In rare cases, reinstalling macOS can resolve firmware or system-level issues affecting charging.
⚠️ Important: Reinstalling via Apple Configurator will erase all data from your Mac. Make sure you have a full backup before proceeding.
