Regularly updating your iPhone is essential for maintaining security, performance, and accessing the latest features from Apple. This guide walks you through how to update iOS safely and effectively.
⚠️ Before You Start
- Back up your data using iCloud or by connecting your iPhone to a Mac. This protects your files in case anything goes wrong. See our backup guide here.
- Disconnect any active VPN connections, as these can interfere with download stability or prevent the update from completing.
- Have your device passcode ready. You’ll be prompted to enter it during installation as Face ID won’t work immediately after the update.
How to Update iPhone Wirelessly
- Connect your iPhone to a reliable power source to prevent shutdowns during the update.
- Ensure your iPhone is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, updates can’t install over mobile data.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
- Enter your passcode when prompted to begin the update.
- Let the installation complete. Your iPhone will restart automatically once the update is done.
- After rebooting, reenter your passcode to finish the setup.
Enable Automatic Updates
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- Enable options for both Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates.
When turned on, your iPhone will automatically download and install updates overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi.
⚠️Important: Some updates may still require manual confirmation. It’s a good idea to check periodically for new updates.
