Primitive Labs, announced on Thursday 15th August 2024 the release of their new Geekbench AI software. Renowned for their benchmarking tool Geekbench 5 and Geekbench 6, this new iteration allows for users to compare the capabilities of their computers for AI related workloads for machine learning applications.
What does Geekbench AI measure?
Geekbench AI measures the output of your CPU, GPU, and NPU and provides a score based on how well your device can handle ten AI workloads. The score is divided into three categories (Full Precision Score, Half Precision Score and Quantized Score).
The reason behind the three categories of scoring is due to the variances of every day usage from developers of AI software, and the way in which they utilise a computer's hardware in their processes. Similar to how CPU benchmark scores measure single and multi-core scores for different workloads, developers will be able to optimise their software for better performance for particular tasks based on the scores output from Geekbench AI benchmark.
While it is difficult to quantify what a good AI benchmark score looks like due to the ever changing ways in which AI is used, the three scores can provide some insight into the performance of AI developer's individual tasks and compare the performance across different variations of hardware and how they use it.
As Geekbench AI is very much in its infancy, the picture and understanding of what a score reflects will become more clear in the coming months as more developers begin to use the tool. We will certainly revisit this topic once there is more clarification.
If you would like to know more about Geekbench Scores, we have another article that goes into more detail about Geekbench 6 and what the scores relate to here.
What OS is compatible with Geekbench Ai?
Users will have the choice to run identical workloads across multiple operating systems, with support for iOS, macOS, Windows, Android and Linux. The results of your AI benchmark scores can be uploaded and compared on the Geekbench browser.
APPLE INTELLIGENCE
With the announcement of macOS Sequoia on June 10, 2024 Apple has fully embraced the potential artificial intelligence can have for both software development and how we use our devices on a daily basis. Once released, any device with an Apple silicon processor will be able to benefit from the advancements of AI. This includes MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Studio and Mac mini with the M1, M2 or M3 Apple silicon chipset.
If you are interested in learning more about Apple Intelligence, we have an article available here that delves into what you can expect from the update. We also have a great range of refurbished Apple silicon devices available on our website that will have full AI compatibility with Apple Intelligence once macOS Sequoia is released.
