Hum or Buzzing Through MacBook Speakers While Using an Audio Interface

When your MacBook is connected to a power source, you might notice a hum or buzzing sound while using an audio interface for example, when recording guitar in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).

🔎 The Cause

If you hear a hum or buzzing through your speakers while recording with an audio interface, it’s likely due to how the MacBook handles power. Apple chargers are designed without a grounding pin, which is normal and safe thanks to built-in electrical isolation. However, this design can sometimes cause minor interference when the MacBook is plugged in, especially during audio recording when using an instrument connected to an audio interface.

✅ The Solution

To eliminate any hum we recommend using a official Apple Power Adapter Extension Cable, which can be purchased from Apple at the link provided below.

💡Tip: Hearing a buzz through the speakers can depend on the instrument you’re recording, so this solution may not eliminate all interference. For instance, recording an electric guitar with high distortion or gain can introduce buzz or feedback. To help reduce this, you might want to try using a noise gate in your DAW, lowering the gain level, or using a guitar equipped with noiseless pickups.
